How We Turned One Bathroom into Two!

January 9, 2020

It’s done! What was once a poorly laid out extra large sized bathroom, is now a beautiful & functional master bathroom AND separate powder room! A special thank you to my dear friend Megan for coming up with the concept.

We knew the master bathroom had to be completed before selling our home, & it ended up being one of the very last projects we tackled. Our home had two bathrooms, one of which was downstairs and used by my children, & the other upstairs connected to the master – yet also had another entrance for guests to use. It always felt weird having company over and they would use our master bath, since it was located on the main level where our living/kitchen is.

Megan came up with the brilliant idea since our master bathroom was so large – she said “why don’t you split it into two bathrooms and create a guest powder room?” we thought the idea was genius!

Glenn started tearing out the old tub on October 29, 2019, but then took a hiatus because we’ve been busy with work/kids and other projects. He then started again about a week before Christmas & just went crazy working nonstop for two solid weeks. The bathroom is 100% worth it and the fact that we now have a separate third restroom for guests to use is even better (plus it’s great for a home sale!).

The total cost for the project is just shy of $5000. However, we estimate that if we had hired a contractor to do it, it would fall somewhere between $20,000 and $25,000 (especially since you are creating a whole new bathroom). Fortunately Glenn is professionally trained to do this type of work and was able to successfully complete the entire project. We had his friend Justin assist with removing the original cast iron sunken tub – which was a total nightmare by the way. Ultimately the tub had to be shattered intentionally and thrown from the window into a dump trailer. My dad and mom also chipped in for our Christmas present and purchased some of our fixtures + toilets for us. All in all, with the gift cost included, it was just shy of $5,000. We spent approximately $4,400. The items were purchased throughout the years as we found good deals.

I will post more information on measurements/layout soon! As well as including any links for products, and also product costs. I was just too excited to get these photos out there to everyone!
